THE NEW, NEW MATH: WHEN ONE PLUS ONE EQUALS ONE

I sometimes think about mathematics.  Although I struggle with it occasionally, especially when I am reading books on physics, it fascinates me despite the fact that it tends to raise more questions than it answers.  Can I get a witness?  One question, in particular, has intrigued me for several years.  And that is:  Does mathematics have a formula that accounts for the reality where one plus one equals one?

This question first came to mind when I was musing about the mathematics of biologic systems and thinking about how the sperm and the egg unite, one plus one, to create the cell, one, that becomes a human being.  So, is there a mathematical formula that can calculate when one plus one equals one?  And why ask?

Because the Breast Health & Healing Foundation is growing … and this new, new math applies to our growth.  The Foundation is gaining collaborators by the week, sometimes by the day.  Many new and exciting projects are being conceived and drafted, some that will change the way we think about breast cancer, and others will change the way we treat it.  This is not hyperbolic drivel.  This is an emerging reality.

As we approach the end of the lazy days of summer, and gear up for the whirlwind that hits us every September, the Breast Health & Healing Foundation is preparing to shift into higher gears.  Slowly but surely, we are accelerating our virtual footprint across the country.  The popularity of the website is growing.  There are more followers on Twitter.  There are more friends on Facebook.  I gave an important presentation on my work in Maine last month and will speak at two events in September, one locally and one internationally.  My third book, whose profits go entirely to the Foundation, has just been published:  A Woman's Companion, Recipes for Breast Health and Healing.

I want to thank everyone who has pitched in and helped all along the way.  We can be proud of our accomplishments, but only for a brief moment:  for now there are even greater challenges and tasks ahead of us, including organizational meetings all over the country and official book launches in New York City.

Charge up your cell phones.  Plug in to Twitter.  Check out the website and follow my blog regularly.  In the next few months we will see the results of the seeds that were sown by the Breast Health & Healing Foundation during the past six months. It will be a time for the new, new math:  where one plus one plus one … equals one.

Regards,

Kathleen T. Ruddy, MD
